Prepare for a Rewarding Career in Medicine with Hands-On Learning and Real-World Impact

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) at Flinders University is a graduate-entry program designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and professionalism required for a successful medical career in Australia or abroad. With a strong emphasis on practical experience and community engagement, the MD blends cutting-edge science with socially responsible healthcare training.

What You’ll Study

The curriculum is built around three key themes:

  • Doctor and Patient – Learn effective communication and consultation skills to support compassionate, patient-centred care.
  • Knowledge of Health and Illness – Study medical science, anatomy, physiology, pathology, and clinical diagnostics across all major systems.
  • Health Professions and Society – Understand the broader context of healthcare, including Indigenous health, public health policy, ethics, and professionalism.

This student-centred program fosters the personal and academic development needed for a career in modern medicine. You’ll also explore areas like:

  • Socially responsible health practice
  • Advanced clinical research foundations
  • Interdisciplinary teamwork and collaborative care
  • Contemporary healthcare challenges in rural and urban settings

Practical Experience

From your first year, you’ll participate in hands-on training across clinical environments—from GP clinics to major hospitals. You’ll also engage in simulated learning and case-based scenarios designed to build your confidence and competence.

Key practical elements include:

  • Early patient interaction and clinical skills development
  • Integrated placements in both urban and rural health settings
  • Opportunities to train in the Northern Territory and South Australian regions through Flinders’ established rural health network
  • Supportive mentorship and supervision throughout your placements

Placement Requirements

Before commencing clinical placements, students must meet the following:

  • Complete immunisations as per state or territory healthcare standards
  • Police clearance and Working with Children Check
  • Health checks and compliance with host institution policies
These requirements help ensure both student safety and professional readiness for medical environments.
